Moved into a new house last weekend. I’ve always been intrigued by the silent code for neighbors in Vegas (noone talks to anyone else) and decided to challenge it in my neighborhood. I saw a neighbor across the street loading stuff into his car and walked over. I introduced myself and observed. He almost flinched as I walked over as if he thought I would hit him or try to sell him something. As I began to talk to him casually, he uncoiled his shoulders, unleashed his eyebrows, turned his body toward me and grinned. I’ll be the best neighbor I can to him. That is different from what the rest of my community is doing.

There are several practices a lot of my Christian friends have decided not to participate in, and the only reason I have been given is this: “We as Christians are not of this world. We have to find ways to set ourselves apart.” I would like to propose that we begin to look for more creative ways to be different…ways that matter. Love people like Jesus loves them.

By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
